Montpellier - Paris of the South

On recent holidays to Langeudoc over the past few years, the greatest surprise and joy has been discovering the city of Montpellier. It's an incredible mix of French sophistication, chic and energetic, but with a hip and relaxed Mediterranean vibe. A wonderful combination of city sights, the Place de Comedie and Opera House with spectacular architecture, and terrific street cafes and restaurants.

The city's tram system is excellent, a great park and ride destination. Park on the outskirts and take the whole family into the city centre; all for €4 for the day!

And did I mention the shopping?! City centre boutiques, with additional shopping centres on the outstkirts - check out the Odysseum, at exit 29, which also features restaurants, an Aquarium, Bowling Complex, and Cinema.

To sum up this wonderful Mediterranean city? It really is Paris without the formality!

If you are visiting Languedoc this summer, consider Montpellier a must-see destination. It's only 30 minutes by motorway to the outskirts of Montpellier from Pézenas, and makes a great family daytrip.

Here's a great article that summarises the best that Montpellier has to offer:-
